ATLAS Annual Conference, Budapest, 22-24 October 2014

Special track 6: Reinventing the local in tourism landscapes

Track convenors:

Antonio Paolo Russo, University Rovira i Virgili, Spain (antonio.russo@urv.cat)
Greg Richards, Tilburg University, Netherlands (
g.w.richards@uvt.nl)

This special track will include contributions dealing with the modes and issues of ‘glocalization’ of destinations in the evolution of the tourism landscape, under different disciplinary perspectives. In particular it will deal with the communities involved in ‘networked hospitality’ and other peer-to-peer-produced, social-networked-based tourist services and their agency in the restructuring tourism experience and tourist space. A number of contributions are included in a book project directed by A.P. Russo and G. Richards, but the session will be open to other authors, themes and angles.

This track builds on the previous work of the ATLAS Cultural Tourism Research Group, and links with the forthcoming volume on Alternative and Creative Tourism (ATLAS; 2014).

Among the themes anticipated to be covered in the Conference Track are:

·         Networked forms of tourism, including networked hospitality

·         Peer to peer tourism services and experiences

·         Social networks and tourism

·         Alternative and creative tourism and the production of tourist space and place

·         Meetings of hosts and guests in new tourism landscapes

·         The production of tourist places by new intermediaries (experience brokers, creative entrepreneurs, designers, etc)

·         The role of creative networks in producing tourism places

This list is not exhaustive. Other suggested themes will also be considered.

The deadline for submission of abstracts to ATLAS (www.atlas-euro.org) is July 1st 2014.
